What Causes Bunions?

Bunions are a three-dimensional deformity that can form at the base of your big toe joint. This is caused by genetics, meaning that some people are more likely to be born with or have the tendency to develop them over time. When a bunion develops, it becomes more noticeable as the bones shift and move out of place. In most cases the bones involved move in three dimensions as they shift position. The deformity that results can make wearing closed-toe shoes difficult and can cause pain when walking or exercising. It may even interfere with the ability to work or perform simple, regular daily activities. The bunion may even be a source of embarrassment to those who find that they have been limited as to the type and style of shoes that they are forced to wear in order to manage their pain.

Can A Bunion Go Away On Its Own?

Bunions will not go away on their own, and in most cases, will continue to get worse over time. While conservative, non-surgical treatment may be helpful in reducing the pain associated with bunions, only surgery can correct the deformity itself.  Various traditional procedures are used to correct bunions, but it is not uncommon for them to return over time following surgery.  This may be due to the procedure not fully correcting or addressing the cause of the bunion. Fortunately, new advances in bunion surgery allow all three dimensions of the deformity to be corrected at the root cause of the bunion, greatly reducing the chance of recurrence.

What Is The Most Advanced Surgery For Bunions?

The Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion Correction™ is a new surgical procedure that uses a special system of instruments that is designed for the purpose of bunion correction and offers variations and options that allows the surgeon to tailor the correction to specific patients' requirements and preferences. The Lapiplasty technique has been continuously refined so as to offer surgeons and patients excellent correction and long lasting stability with low risks of  deformity recurrence.

Is Lapiplasty Better Than Regular Bunion Surgery?

It is a paradigm shift in the way bunions are corrected. Traditional bunion surgery focused on trying to improve the appearance of the foot while the Lapiplasty focuses on restoring normal alignment and, perhaps more important, stability to the foot. The result is a surgery that not only corrects the bunion, but also addresses the root cause of the underlying three dimensional deformity. The manner in which the correction is secured during surgery allows for earlier postoperative weight bearing, simplifying recovery. Most patients can bear weight on the involved foot within three days using a special post-op boot while other procedures may require up to six or even eight weeks of postoperative non-weight bearing.
